Vagina Monologue

The world descended from the vagina. It lives on because of the vagina. It revolves around the vagina. A word that you cannot pronounce without embarrassment painting your cheeks a mild red, even though its vulgar variants roll off the tongue with relative ease and, often, wicked relish.

A tiny artwork of flesh, on the face of it; but the most powerful weapon on earth. Block the vagina and mankind would be wiped off the face of earth in less than 50 years. Such is its power, such is its allure. The power lies in the allure.

In an age when millions can be made out of anything and everything provided you come up with the right idea, won't it be utterly foolish to ignore something whose power and allure is so universal? And so, they now want to whiten and tighten your vaginas. First came the ad for a whitening cream, and now the ad for a tightening gel (featuring, of all people, a joint Tamilian family!).

I am not sure whether these commercials are shown on television and therefore reach the larger Indian audience; but they are certainly a rage on the internet, mostly because of the opinions expressed against them by women bloggers and writers. Each time a writer vents her anger, she also weaves You Tube links to these commercials into her thought-provoking prose, in the process only popularising the products further. Of every 10 women reading such posts, I am sure there will be at least three who, once their outrage has subsided, would be tempted to try out the products. That's precisely what the marketing guys want: to play on the insecurity of the women about how they look down there.

I find such sense of insecurity to be utterly foolish -- just as I find foolish the obsession of certain men with tightness (though I've never heard anyone lament the lack of whiteness). True, any sexual relationship between a man and a woman fructifies at the vagina; but does the whiteness and the tightness matter?

The vagina is not a product that you check for whiteness or tightness before you decide to enter it; you usually enter it out of blind passion, no matter how it looks or feels. The vagina may be the culmination of togetherness, but it certainly cannot be the starting point of togetherness. If your man finds you any less desirable because your vagina is dark and not so tight, dump him! -- or ask him to get a penis just as white and perpetually hard as they show in porn films.

The vagina, in my humble opinion, is as beautiful and alluring as the woman it belongs to. When you are truly into a woman, you don't really care how white or tight she is, do you? In fact, you feel grateful when she lets you go down on her, because it is more fun exploring the vagina of a woman you admire than exploring a woman whose vagina you admire. The woman comes first, the vagina later. The vagina may be the most powerful weapon on earth, but it's the woman's mind that holds the key.

Very nice blog post; love the views expressed, and nice counter-points to those raised by women. I like the way you look at it (ahem); and the last line - well, if the manufacturers intended the product as empowering women, they should read this post :-)

This comment is thanks to a good feminist friend (reacting to the popular anatomical mislabling of the part).

ITS NOT A VAGINA! ITS A FUCKING VULVA!!!!

its obvious from this post how much you respect and love women...your writing was very sensitive and powerful...somehow it even made me shed a few tears! How nice it would be if every man thought like this! Of all the posts I've read on the blogosphere, this is my favourite....

I like the post, BG. I like the line of thought that one shouldn't have insecurities about one's body/vagina. And your argument for the same is graceful.

The writing is beautifully crisp - "even though its vulgar variants roll off the tongue with relative ease and, often, wicked relish." - truer words were never spoken. It's known that almost all serious verbal abuses are to do with a woman's sexuality - men abuse each other by insulting their mothers/sisters etc. Your line sums it up very compactly.

But, I have some thoughts: I do not see the vagina as a particular manifestation of power for the woman - ideally, I would like to see it as other organs that are empowering in their own right - eyes, hands, ears etc. I do not associate any pride or power with it.

I am wondering if for many women - the innumerous rape victims - it is the same vagina that makes them more vulnerable in a context where men oppress/abuse women. I don't know what these women think.

Then, there seems to be a mild glorification of the vagina for its link with the woman's ability for child-bearing and perpetuating humankind. Could it be, for some women, a mere instrument of pleasure? Like the penis would be, for men. I don't know - I am simply thinking aloud.

And that is so true....

@ Rameshram: Good one! ofcourse it is the fucking vulva and not the vagina. The tightness is attributed to the vulval outlet and due to the muscular laxity that occurs after childbirth.
Now I wonder about all those women who have birthed multiple times. How many times their husbands have desired them?
Does our author have any recent experiences to quote from? or is he still banking on the numerous pasts?

So here we go again...talking about the technicalities of vulva and vagina, missing the main point all together. I hate democracy...
Nice post anyway BG.
Don't know why but reminds me of a damned nice short story by KhushWant Singh

Very well written,...i can see the immense experience (past and present) in the "area" you have detailed here. Could have been more precise and a few quotes from your real time experience on the topic (past or present).....kozhi kuruda irundhaa yenna....kuzhambu rusiyaa thaan irukkum...

Clearly you got to be baked to say this is a tribute to women. It's a well written post alright. No doubts there. But it has a subject. The blogger has argued the insensible products in the market and in due course has justified the fact that behind the need for an action is the need for a mind. Now, to shed tears or hail it as the best post is taking away the essence of it and makes it sound like your unaware of other pressing issues with respect to women. You have not read several earlier posts. Go read them.

What next? Penis-vagina dialogue? You are reducing the entire human being to the piece of flesh between the legs? Will you be able to talk to your mother, sisters and wife on these lines?

i think its high time you move on to decent topics.iam surprised that so called read people actually sit and lull over cheap topics like these.you see a woman with big breasts and start talking to her about its importance you are not respecting her in fact you are belittling her because its you who is deriving cheap pleasure in indulging topics like this.

i think it is another attempt of marketing maniacs to belittle the dignity which goes with womanhood. it fills me with embarrassment and indignation. Sounds ridiculous.it seems an attempt to blow the elements of grace and decency, represetatives of woman, to smithereens. I don't think there might have ever been any demand for such a product to tighten 'IT' or whiten 'IT' from the target audience. Good u wrote it mocking at it in a very sublte way with a lurking meassage provided it could be deciphered by those behind such vulgar campaigns....

So you removed my comment. That's alright. But in turn you got lambasted by two feminine powers. Ha ha ha, that too in bad grammar and minus spell check. I shall rest in peace. Lick it.

Well written. The words, balanced well, to trudge on the unknown (forbidden) literary territory of the subject matter on a public domain.Well done.Thought provoking too.Of-course exposing the marketeers greed to sell whatever they want and in whichever way they want.Even a woman and her vagina are seen only as products by this greedy.Only such writing brings/highlights the necessity of a soul to appreciate women and their vaginas...Keep it up.
