We have all read, or at least heard about, Jawaharlal Nehru's famous
Tryst With Destiny speech which he made on the midnight of August 14-15, 1947. But what Nehru had written in the first draft was 'date with destiny', and not 'tryst with destiny'. 'Date' was later changed to 'tryst' because of its supposed negative connotation, as in people going on a 'date'.

hm. Tryst definitely sounds better than a date - more mature, more serious than a date which is rather tentative.
